How To Care For Bleached Hair

The same blonde woman from behind twice, frizzy bleached hair on the left and smooth glossy hair on the right, with How to care for bleached hair?

Lightened hair looks bright and feels different from the hair you had before: rougher to the touch, quicker to tangle and harder to comb. That's because lightening changes the hair's surface as well as its colour. The good news is that a simple everyday routine of gentle washing, conditioning, careful detangling and a little cover from the sun can keep it soft, shiny and easy to manage.

To find out more about lightening with a weaker mix, read How to bleach bath hair.

Why does bleached hair need different care?

Lightener doesn't just work on the surface. It reaches inside the hair and changes the bonds that hold its protein together, and the stronger the lightening, the more protein the hair loses. It's a lasting change, and the lengths of your hair are made of non-living cells, so care products work on how hair feels and behaves, not by healing it.

The surface changes too. Lightening strips away the hair's natural water-repellent outer layer, and everyday washing and wear add to that over time. Sun, rough washing and friction all leave the surface less water-repellent and more negatively charged, which is why lightened hair can feel rough and tangle more.

That roughness matters when you comb. Lightened hair breaks far more easily during combing than unlightened hair, and friction is the main cause. So most of the routine below is about one thing: less friction.

Colour behaves differently too: colour on lightened hair fades faster than the same colour on natural hair.

How often should you wash bleached hair?

There's no set number of washes a week for lightened hair. Wash as often as your scalp needs, and condition every time.

Shampoo itself isn't the problem. Strong sulphate cleansers can leave hair frizzy and dry, so a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo is a sensible choice if your hair feels dry or frizzy. Strong cleansers also leave hair more negatively charged, which can add frizz and friction. Conditioner is what balances that out.

Why is conditioner so important for bleached hair?

Conditioner works by balancing the hair's negative charge and coating the surface so strands slide past each other. That means less friction, fewer tangles and easier combing. Silicones are the most widely used conditioning ingredient.

Lightened hair takes up conditioning ingredients more readily, because lightening leaves more negative charge on its surface. A conditioning shampoo helps, and following it with a conditioner helps most, with fewer strands breaking as you comb.

Conditioners can bring the friction of weathered hair down to levels close to untreated hair, until the next wash, which is why it's worth conditioning every time.

If your hair still feels dry, an oil can be an extra step. An oil film slows how fast hair takes up and loses moisture. It washes off, so it's a temporary layer, not a change to the hair.

How do you detangle bleached hair?

Wet hair stretches more easily and is a little weaker than dry hair, and lightened hair even more so, so take extra care while it's wet.

Detangle from the ends up, gently, with a wide-tooth comb. For straight or wavy hair, combing is harder work when wet, so go slowly. Curly and coily hair is usually easier to detangle wet, with conditioner or a mask in.

Can you use heat on bleached hair?

Yes, with a little care. Let hair dry fully before you straighten or curl it, because straightening wet hair changes its structure much more than straightening dry hair. Lots of repeated passes with a very hot straightener weaken hair too, so use a lower setting and fewer passes.

When you blow-dry, distance matters. The hotter the air reaching your hair, the more the surface is affected, and air from a dryer held close is far hotter than air from one held further back. Keep the dryer about 15 cm away.

A heat protectant sprayed on before styling may help too.

How do you look after bleached hair in the sun and the pool?

Strong sun affects hair protein in the same kind of way lightening does, and leaves the surface less water-repellent.

Hair products with UV filters may add some protection, but only partial, and unlike sun cream there's no official rating for them. In strong sun, a hat or scarf is the simplest cover.

Very light or lightened hair can pick up a green tint from copper in pool or tap water, so comb some conditioner through before you swim.

What about toning bleached hair?

Toning is about colour, not condition, so it sits alongside this routine rather than replacing any step. Tone only when your colour needs it, and keep up the everyday care below.

What's a simple routine for bleached hair?

Seven-step routine for bleached hair: wash as needed, condition every wash, oil if dry, detangle from the ends, dry before heat, cover up, trim

  1. Wash as often as your scalp needs. Choose a gentle shampoo; sulphate-free is a sensible pick if your hair feels dry or frizzy.
  2. Condition after every wash. Smooth it through your mid-lengths and ends and rinse as the pack directs.
  3. Add an oil or mask if your hair feels dry. Use it as the pack directs.
  4. Detangle gently from the ends up. Use a wide-tooth comb, and take extra care while hair is wet.
  5. Dry before heat styling. Hold the dryer about 15 cm away, use a heat protectant, and keep straighteners on a lower setting with fewer passes.
  6. Cover up in strong sun. A hat or scarf is the simplest option. Before a swim, comb some conditioner through your lengths.
  7. Book regular trims. Trims take off split ends. No product can mend them for good.

Pro Tip: If you only change one thing, make it conditioner after every wash. It's the step that makes the biggest difference to how lightened hair combs, with fewer strands snapping.

When can you lighten your hair again?

There's no set gap between lightening sessions. The surface gets rougher with each one, so let the condition of your hair and a strand test guide you, and ask your stylist.

In the meantime, regular trims take off split ends. No everyday product can permanently mend split ends. Some can hold them together for a while, but it washes out.
